Hello, and welcome to the Jobnob Blog (say that 10 times fast). We created Jobnob as a place for BOTH employees and employers to get access to better information. Something is wrong with job boards on the Internet and we are here to fix it. It’s rather astonishing that in the over 15 years that the Internet has been alive and kicking, there has been relatively little change in how job boards look or function. Go to any of the major sites (Monster, CareerBuilder, HotJobs) and you will likely notice little difference between them. That is because job boards are and have been just a long list of jobs available. That’s it. No additional information to help inform people about what kind of jobs there are, or what might be a good fit for them. No wonder job seekers end up sending out hoards of resumes to any employer listed within a 100 mile radius- what else can they do?
Well at Jobnob, we think we can do a whole lot better. Let’s start with salary information. Why is it that in this country no one talks about their salaries? It’s like some secret we all keep. How would you even respond if someone you just met or even a good friend asked you how much you earned? Would your jaw drop a little? Would you stammer out a “Well… um….” Probably, because we just don’t talk about it. By the way, this is in stark contrast to other places in the world where it is perfectly acceptable to talk about salaries and the prices of just about anything. But because it is a taboo subject in the States, we are ALL in the dark about what other people are earning, what we should be earning, and what we could be earning. This includes employers as well. Did you know that many HR departments spend thousands (if not tens of thousands) of dollars a year subscribing to compensation databases to try to figure out what competitors are paying? Only problem is that even after paying all that money, the HR departments STILL don’t get to see what specific companies are paying their employees. So at the end of the day, it’s just a guessing game for them too.
Why all the secrecy? Who knows- we are clearly uncomfortable with the topic as a society. We figure that we can’t change society, so Jobnob has figured out a way to get you the information you always wanted but probably never dreamed you could get. We’re not forcing you to give us your salary information (no kung fu arm twisting here). And we are most certainly not making you pay for the information (can you say “90’s”?). Nope, it’s just here for you to see as you wish. So feel free to look around all you want. As I said, we’re just starting with salary information right now, but there are a lot more features coming down the road, so keep checking back with us. Oh, and one more thing. We’re new and scrappy, and our marketing budget is pretty tight (no Superbowl ad for us this year). So if you think the site is groovy, then we sure would appreciate it if you would tell a friend.
