Unemployed? What you can do to be un-unemployed!

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Unemployment is no joking matter. It’s scary to be unemployed right now, but if you’ve just been laid-off, recently quit your job, or are scared that your job won’t even exist in a few more weeks, know that you can still find jobs out there. And finding a job as quickly as possible is the goal.

But to ensure that you minimize the amount of time that you are unemployed, it is key to not dwell on the fact that you are now unfortunately not employed. You have to remain focused, optimistic, and – most importantly – flexible to get yourself un-unemployed and back to work.

I think you can quickly guess why I say that you have to be focused and optimistic when it comes to your job search, but the flexible part may be a bit puzzling to you. I’m sure you’re thinking that you’re more than willing to be flexible when it comes to a new job: maybe you’re willing to take a pay cut, a lower title, or work a job in an industry you never thought of working before. That is not what I’m implying by being flexible though.

Being flexible in this economy means being willing to take on a job that you may never have thought of working before. Maybe you were scared that someone would scoff at you for dreaming of being a Deputy Supreme Knight, Product Design Manager, or even a Playboy Bunny. Before you completely write me off, take a look at the salaries of the positions that I just listed. I guarantee you that each one of those jobs is being paid more than someone who is standing in an unemployment line.

New Grads are Unemployed and Flexible. Are You?

New Grads are Unemployed and Flexible. Are You?

Take a minute to really look at the entirety of your career. You may have held the title of CEO, Director of QA, or Marketing Manager. Take that title and think about if you were really happy working that position. Maybe you really loved your computer coding class in college, or you want to have the option of making an unlimited amount of money working in sales, or you really want to help people. This could be the time for you to press the reset button and start a new career in something that you’ve always wanted to try. It doesn’t even have to be as drastic a change as I implied above. I’ve heard there’s a growing demand for Ruby programmers and keep in mind that a company will always need Sales Managers to ensure the cash keeps flowing.

Sun Microsystems Employees Earn More Than Oracle Employees: Watch Out for Layoffs!

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Word on the street is that Oracle is going to buy Sun Microsystems for $5.6 billion paying $9.50 a share.  That’s a nice chunk of change.  So what will happen to the employees?  Some analysts are speculating that Oracle will lower the axe on as many as a third of Sun Microsystem’s employees, or 33,500 employees.  When one company acquires another and the threat of layoffs loom, it’s always interesting to know how much the employees at one company make versus the employees at the other company.  Until now, only the corporate finance and merger teams had access to that kind of data, but now, anyone can compare the salaries of Oracle employees vs Sun Microsystems employees at www.jobnob.com.  These are just sample sizes so actual numbers may vary, but this should give us a good peek.  Let’s take a looksey.

Uh oh, looks like there might be a problem!  No wonder there are rumors of layoffs- Sun Micro is paying more than Oracle.  There’s no way that Oracle wants to raise the salaries of all of their employees, so it’s easier to get rid of the Sun people.

Let’s look at another set of salaries for Software Systems Engineers.

  • An Oracle Software Systems Engineer earns an average of $78,000 with a range of $66,000-$85,000 (based on 14 salaries).
  • A Sun Microsystems Software Systems Engineer earns an average of $84,000 with a range of $67,000-$113,000 (based on 7 salaries).

Once again the Sun Micro salaries are higher than the Oracle salaries.

Oracle beat out IBM for Sun and it’s said the deal was brokered in just three days.  It’s believed that this acquisition will put Oracle into the data center game and place it in a position to compete with Cisco, IBM and Hewlett-Packard.  Stay tuned for more information!

Industry Salary Averages and Individual Salaries by Company

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Jobnob has helped you find new ways of looking at salary information in our last two blogs. We told you how you can look at salaries by city and salaries by profession, and now we talk about another way: salaries by industry. We thought it was important to organize our information into industries to let you look at not only your company, but also competitive companies in your industry. This is helpful for both employees and employers. For employees- you want to know what company in your industry pays the highest, so you can work there! And for employers- you want to know what companies in your industry are underpaying their workers so that you can hire away their best talent. So see- it’s a win win for everyone!

Average Salaries by Industry

Average Salaries by Industry

So let’s take a look at the Industry Overview pages where you can access more salaries and open jobs. Here you’ll find eleven major Industries: Construction & Real Estate, Education, Energy & Utilities, Financial Services, Food & Agriculture, Government, Healthcare, Media & Entertainment, Professional Services, Retail & Consumer Goods, and Technology. Each major industry group has sectors which are clickable. So let’s go ahead and click on Technology- Internet and see what’s there.

Average Internet Salaries

Average Internet Salaries

On the Internet Jobs & Salaries page we see a list of Internet Companies: Amazon, Ebay, Expedia, Google, MySpace and Yahoo. Of course there are many more Internet companies in our database, but Jobnob is just pulling out a few examples for you to browse through. So for these six Internet companies you can see some summary information about them. We give you their headquarter location, average pay, number of salaries in our database and the highest paying jobs at that company. So if we look at Yahoo, we have 598 salaries and people are earning an average of $82,207 at Yahoo. The highest paying job at Yahoo is a Vice President of Marketing position who earns $153,000, followed by a VP Business Development earning $150,176. If you don’t see your Industry or sector, feel free to search the Jobnob database- we’ve got hundreds of thousands of more salaries.

Google Salary Information: You Can’t Google It!

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Did you ever wish you could see how much people are really making at Google? Well now you can! There’s a new site called Jobnob that shows you real salary information- actual salaries that people are earning at Google (but you probably already knew that or wouldn’t be reading our blog!). You can go to directly to the Google salaries page by clicking this link http://www.jobnob.com/google-salary and you will see 762 salaries for 145 different jobs at Google. For example, the highest paying job in our database is a Marketing Director at Google earning a salary of $200,000 and the lowest paying job we have at Google is an Operations Research Analyst earning $40,000. Please note that obviously this does not cover every job and every salary at Google, we only have data for 762 people, but these are 100% REAL salaries. If you want to see the jobs we have the most number of salaries for, then sort on the “Salaries” link at the top of the graph. Now you should see that Jobnob has 339 salaries for the position of Software Engineer at Google. The long green bar there is showing you the range and the little arrow with the number above it shows the average. So for the position of Software Engineer at Google, people are earning a range of $65,000-$190,000 with an average salary of $100,000.

Of course location is an important part of anyone’s salary figure, so you can also filter the data by the city in which Google has an office. Click on the box that says “Show: All Cities” and it will bring up a menu with 72 metro area locations. Any city name that is in blue means that Google is paying people who work there. So that means that Google is paying salaries in the following cities: Los Angeles, Orange County, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Boulder, Atlanta, Boston, New York City, and Pittsburgh. When you click on one of those city names, it will show you a salary graph for Google specific to that city. So try clicking on “Silicon Valley” and then you will see only the salaries that Google is paying to employees located in the Silicon Valley. When you do that you should now see 590 salaries for 130 Professions.

Do you work at Google? Wish you could add your salary to the Google salary page? We do too! So eventually we may be developing that functionality. But for now we hope you’re happy just to be able to see real compensation information at Google (or most any other company you want). But if there are features that you want to see, be sure to drop us a line. We really do want to hear from you, and we take all feedback seriously. Seriously!
